Not a rock

I’ve been absent from blogging for a while – partly due to travel and partly due to a heavy amount of gardening that I’ll show you another time.  First some snippets from our trip down to South Carolina, starting with this, the coolest thing I’ve seen all year.

Walking the beaches in South Carolina a few weeks ago, I thought I saw a bunch of rocks along the shore, until we got closer and was a rock, until I saw that the rock had a tail! My friend and Shakes went one way, while I promptly dug around for my iphone…

A horseshoe crab!

That’s the back end – but it’s way more interesting than the front end. Only the night before, we’d watched a video on TV about these creatures, and the harvesting of their blood for use in testing for bacterial contamination in drugs and medications.   Things that make you go hmmmmm….check out this article.

Read more about these pre-historic creatures – like how they have 9 eyes!

Later that afternoon…we discovered why we saw them on the shores in the first place – mating season! Horseshoe crabs are protected against harvesting in SC, and us gawkers didn’t seem to bother them much.

And then we gave them some privacy…
